background

Frederator Networks developed a new method to discover talent and speed up the animation process. The “Shots” initiative, a sub brand of 2.2 million subscriber YouTube channel “Cartoon Hangover”, would put out a call for 18-24 year old, up-and-coming animators to submit a shot (a 30-50 second original animation). The channel would feature top shelf selections and the company’s studio would represent the highest-performing animations.

objective

The client, VP at Frederator Networks, requested an enticing visual brand for “Shots” that referenced “Cartoon Hangover”, but with a refreshing twist that would encourage submissions and reignite interest in the channel.

challenges

  1. How do we lean into the alcohol/bar theme without scaring off younger viewers?

  2. How can we use cartoons as a vessel to censor this adult topic?

solution

For the “Shots” logo, I pulled the iconic color red and skull imagery from the original “Cartoon Hangover” logo and transformed it into a cherry bomb. To lighten up the bar theme, I researched how cartoons visualized and referred to alcohol and noticed it used family-friendly beverage motifs like juice or punch. So I went with pop. The bottles were shaped like 1L soda bottles, the flavors were fun and fruity, and fizz was added to the liquid when poured. The bright, candy color palette brought everything together while the bar used neutral tones to create balance and ambience.
